‘Avant-garde elevator music’ produced in collaboration with
free jazz saxophonist Brandon Evans. The piece was made for an elevator
installation at New York’s Art In General. The recording, which
has the loose feel of a rehearsal, focused on ensemble passages of ascending
and descending scales in John Coltrane’s ‘Ascension’
(1965), which, in the context of the elevator, takes on a humorous narrative
association. A video loop shown on a CCTV monitor in the elevator showed
one of the building’s security’s movement detectors, whose
little LED lights seemed to flash in time with the music.
