A Little Oracle
2004
Mixed media installation with 36 min audio piece

'A Little Oracle' is a multi-layered audio installation that adapts and responds to the James Joyce short story 'A Little Cloud'.

The work includes my own adaptation of Joyce's story, recorded and mixed with sound effects and music in the style of a radio play. The story plays from a x4 scale sculpture of an old 1970's transistor radio that replicates in every detail the scratches, stains and accumulated grime of the original on which it is based. The sculpture fully functions as a radio, containing its own receiver, amplifier and speakers - the audio transmitting to the radio from an antenna just a few feet away.

The project seeks to use radio broadcast as a metaphor to explore and challenge the relationship between center and periphery maintained in Joyce's tale of colonial stasis.
