Rise and Fall
2006
16mm film/DVD
1 min, 40 secs

A 16mm film that, alongside 'The Morning After' (1998) and 'The Collaboration' (2006), forms a loosely connected trilogy exploring architectural space in New York City.

'Rise and Fall' is shot at Foley Square in Lower Manhattan. A reverse zoom shot slowly reveals a disheveled man sitting on a park bench. A spoken monologue on the soundtrack describes in portentous terms an ambitious architectural project. The camera rapidly pans onto the object of the character's scrutiny (and the building being described in the voice over) - the looming tower of the Federal Office Building at 26 Federal Plaza. The panning shot is accompanied by a musical crescendo on the soundtrack. As the music dies down, the scene cuts back to the man on the bench, this time seen from a distance, as he is approached by police and moved on.
